Meaning
The Shah Mir dynasty was the first Muslim dynasty to rule Kashmir. Shah Mir founded it in 1339, and it became known as the Sultanate of Kashmir. It ruled Kashmir until the Chak family took over in the 16th century. Akbar conquered Kashmir in 1586.
Example
Zain-ul-Abidin ruled from 1420 to 1470 and was the dynasty's most famous ruler. Kashmiris called him Budshah, meaning "great king". He allowed Hindus who had left to return, and he removed jizya. He also had Sanskrit works translated into Persian and encouraged crafts such as shawl-weaving.
Don't confuse with
- Sikandar of the same dynasty: an earlier sultan nicknamed Butshikan, meaning "breaker of images", for destroying temples. Zain-ul-Abidin, his son, is remembered for the opposite, his religious tolerance.
