Meaning

The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat. It was listed in 2004. It contains the ruins of Champaner, a city that Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat made his capital. The site has mosques, walls, gateways and wells. Above it stands Pavagadh hill, with older Hindu and Jain shrines. The site shows a sultanate capital that has survived almost unchanged.

Example

Mahmud Begada captured Champaner in 1484 and rebuilt it as his capital. Its Jami Masjid joins Islamic design with local Gujarati carving in stone. The Kalika Mata temple stands on top of Pavagadh hill.

Don't confuse with

  • Historic City of Ahmedabad: also a Gujarat sultanate city on the UNESCO list (2017). It is a living, crowded city founded by Ahmad Shah I. Champaner is mostly an abandoned archaeological site.
