Malwa sultanate
Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Malwa sultanate was an independent kingdom in central India. It broke away from Delhi after the Tughlaqs grew weak. Dilawar Khan Ghuri, a Tughlaq governor, founded it around 1401. His son Hoshang Shah moved the capital from Dhar to Mandu, also called Shadiabad, meaning "city of joy". Malwa often fought its neighbours, Gujarat and Mewar.
Example
Baz Bahadur was the last ruler of Malwa and is remembered for his love of music and for Rani Rupmati. Akbar's forces defeated him in 1561, and Malwa became part of the Mughal Empire by 1562.
Don't confuse with
- Bhoja Paramara of Malwa: an earlier Hindu king of the 11th century, with his capital at Dhara. He was a scholar-king and sent forces to help the Hindu Shahis against Mahmud of Ghazni. The Malwa sultanate came about four centuries later.
