Meaning

Diwan-i-Khairat was a charity department (khairat means "charity"). Firuz Shah Tughlaq set it up in Delhi in the 14th century. It helped poor Muslim families. For example, it gave money for the weddings of daughters from needy homes. It shows Firuz trying to rule as a caring Muslim king who followed religious law.

Example

Under Firuz Shah Tughlaq (ruled 1351–1388), poor parents in Delhi could apply to the Diwan-i-Khairat for help with their daughters' marriages. Firuz also opened a free hospital in Delhi, the Dar-ul-Shifa ("house of healing").

Don't confuse with

  • Diwan-i-Bandagan: this was Firuz Shah's department of slaves. It trained and employed slaves. Diwan-i-Khairat gave charity.
  • Dar-ul-Shifa: this was Firuz's free hospital, not the charity department.
