Firuz Shah Kotla
Also called: Firozabad · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Firuz Shah Kotla is the citadel (inner fort and palace) of Firozabad. Firuz Shah Tughlaq founded Firozabad in Delhi, on the bank of the Yamuna, in c. 1354. The site is famous because an Ashokan pillar stands inside it. This shows that later rulers admired the monuments of ancient India and carried them away to their own cities.
Example
Firuz Shah had an Ashokan pillar brought from Topra in Haryana to Firuz Shah Kotla. It was moved carefully on a huge cart and by boats, and set on top of a pyramid-like building of three levels. The pillar still has Ashoka's edicts carved on it.
Don't confuse with
- Tughlaqabad Fort: this was a different fortified city in Delhi. It was built earlier, in the 1320s, by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, who founded the Tughlaq dynasty.
