Meaning

DigiLocker is a government platform launched in 2015 where citizens keep authentic documents in a cloud store. A cloud store means online storage that the person can open from any device. Documents are issued straight into DigiLocker by the issuing body, so they can be trusted. Under the 2016 Rules, these documents are treated as equal to the original paper ones. It is part of the data layer of India Stack.

Example

A student can keep their board marksheet in DigiLocker and share it with a college online, without carrying or attesting a paper copy. This cuts paperwork and the risk of fake documents.

Don't confuse with

  • UMANG: one app for using many government services. DigiLocker is for storing and sharing official documents.
