Polity & Governance glossary

Also called: Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance · Topic: Transparency, Accountability and e-Governance · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. It was launched in November 2017. It is a single app that gives access to many central, state and local government services. Citizens do not need a separate app for each department. It follows the "mobile first" and "integrated services" ideas of Digital India.

Example

Instead of downloading different apps for different departments, a citizen can open UMANG and reach several central and state services from one place.

Don't confuse with

  • DigiLocker: a store for official documents. UMANG is a gateway for using services.
  • Common Service Centres: physical village kiosks where a helper gives assisted access. UMANG is an app that people use on their own phones.
