Meaning

A token cut motion is a type of cut motion, a motion moved while the Lok Sabha is voting on demands for grants. It asks to reduce a demand by ₹100. Its aim is to raise a specific grievance that falls within the government's responsibility, not to save money or reject a whole policy. If any cut motion is adopted, the government is defeated.

Example

During the vote on a ministry's demand, an MP moves to cut it by ₹100. The MP uses the motion to highlight a specific complaint about how that ministry has worked.

Don't confuse with

  • Policy cut motion: this reduces the demand to Re 1 to disapprove of the policy.
  • Token grant: this is a grant of Re 1 that lets savings from elsewhere pay for a new service. It is a grant, not a cut motion.
