Betwa and Ken rivers
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Betwa and Ken are right-bank tributaries of the Yamuna. They rise in the Vindhyan region of the Peninsular plateau and drain Bundelkhand, a dry, rocky area of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Like most Peninsular rivers, they are rain-fed, so they carry much less water in the dry season. This makes Bundelkhand short of water.
Example
The Ken–Betwa link is the first project under way in India's plan to link rivers. It will carry Ken water to the Betwa basin. The Cabinet approved it on 8 December 2021 at about ₹44,605 crore, and the foundation stone was laid on 25 December 2024. Its Daudhan dam will flood part of Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.
Don't confuse with
- Chambal: also a right-bank Yamuna tributary, but it rises near Mhow on the Malwa plateau. It is known for its badland ravines, land cut into deep gullies by erosion.
