Mahananda river
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Mahananda river rises in the Darjiling hills of West Bengal. It flows south across north Bengal and Bihar. It is the last left-bank tributary of the Ganga, which means it is the farthest downstream of the tributaries joining from the north. It joins the Ganga in West Bengal, close to where the river enters Bangladesh.
Example
The Mahananda drains the plains of north Bengal around Siliguri and joins the Ganga in West Bengal, near the Bangladesh border.
Don't confuse with
- Mahanadi: a Peninsular river. It rises near Sihawa in Chhattisgarh, flows through Odisha and builds its own delta on the Bay of Bengal. It is not a Ganga tributary.
