Sarda river
Also called: Kali, Mahakali, Sharda · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Sarda river, also written Sharda, is a Himalayan river. It rises in the Milam glacier, where it is called the Goriganga. Along the India–Nepal border it is called the Kali or Chauk, and in Nepal it is the Mahakali. The border with Nepal follows this river. In the plains it joins the Ghaghara, so it reaches the Ganga only through the Ghaghara.
Example
In Uttarakhand, the Kali (Sarda) marks the border between India and Nepal before the river enters the plains of Uttar Pradesh.
Don't confuse with
- Kaligandak: a headstream of the Gandak inside Nepal. It is a different river from the Kali on the border.
- Ghaghara: the larger river the Sarda joins. The Ghaghara is the one that flows into the Ganga at Chhapra.
