Son river
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Structure and Physiography"; Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Son river is the main south-bank (right-bank) tributary of the Ganga. It rises on the Amarkantak plateau, a highland on the Madhya Pradesh–Chhattisgarh border. The Narmada also rises there. Rivers spread out in all directions from Amarkantak, which is called a radial pattern, and the Son flows north. It drops in waterfalls where it comes off the edge of the plateau. It is a rain-fed Peninsular river that ends up in the Himalayan Ganga system.
Example
The Son crosses into Bihar and joins the Ganga near Arrah, west of Patna.
Don't confuse with
- Narmada: also rises at Amarkantak, but it flows west in a rift valley to the Arabian Sea and ends in an estuary.
- Damodar: another plateau river on the Ganga's south side. It runs in a rift valley to the Hugli, not to the main Ganga.
