Ghaghara river
Also called: Karnali · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Ghaghara river is a large Himalayan left-bank tributary of the Ganga. In Nepal it is known as the Karnali. It rises in the Mapchachungo glaciers, close to where the Indus, Satluj and Brahmaputra also begin. It gathers the Tila, Seti and Beri, then cuts a deep gorge at Shishapani before reaching the plains. There the Sarda joins it.
Example
The Ghaghara crosses the plains of eastern Uttar Pradesh and joins the Ganga at Chhapra in Bihar.
Don't confuse with
- Gandak: the next left-bank tributary to the east. It forms from the Kaligandak and Trishulganga and joins the Ganga at Sonpur.
- Sarda: a tributary of the Ghaghara. It does not join the Ganga directly.
