Godavari-Cauvery link
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Godavari–Cauvery link is a proposed river link in the Peninsula. It would carry "surplus" Godavari water south through the Krishna and Pennar basins to the Cauvery basin. The Godavari is the largest Peninsular river. The Cauvery basin often runs short of water and is the subject of a long dispute between states. The project is part of the interlinking-of-rivers plan studied by NWDA (National Water Development Agency). Critics question whether the Godavari really has spare water. They also worry about too little flow being left for river life and about the delta losing silt. Its status is still changing (verify current).
Example
The water would be taken from the Godavari in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and moved through the Krishna and Pennar basins. It would finally reach the Cauvery, which flows into Tamil Nadu.
Don't confuse with
- Ganga–Kaveri link canal: K.L. Rao's 1972 plan to bring Ganga water south. It was dropped because the water would have had to be lifted about 450 m onto the plateau.
