Satluj-Yamuna Link canal
Also called: SYL canal · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Satluj–Yamuna Link (SYL) canal is a planned canal about 214 km long. It is meant to carry Haryana's share of Ravi–Beas water from the Satluj in Punjab to the Yamuna side in Haryana. Haryana finished building its part. Punjab stopped work on its part, saying it has no spare water. In 2004 Punjab passed a law ending its water agreements. The Supreme Court struck that law down in 2016. The matter is still before the Supreme Court (verify current). The case shows how hard it is to share river water between states.
Example
The canal would start near the Satluj in Punjab and run into Haryana. Haryana's part is complete, but the Punjab part lies unfinished.
Don't confuse with
- Indira Gandhi Canal: it carries water from Harike, where the Beas and Satluj meet, into the Thar desert of Rajasthan. It is built and working, unlike the SYL.
