Krishna water dispute

Geography glossary

Also called: Krishna-Godavari water dispute · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 3 "Water Resources"

Meaning

The Krishna water dispute is a long quarrel among Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh over sharing the water of the Krishna. The Krishna is the second-largest east-flowing Peninsular river. The Bachawat tribunal gave its award in 1976. The Brijesh Kumar tribunal was set up in 2004 and took the dispute up again, reporting in 2010 and 2013. When Telangana was created in 2014, the question of sharing water between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was reopened (verify current). The dispute shows why tribunals can take decades to settle.

Example

The Krishna rises near Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. Its basin is 27% in Maharashtra, 44% in Karnataka and 29% in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Big dams such as Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar lie on its lower course, which makes sharing the stored water a sensitive issue.

Don't confuse with

  • Cauvery water dispute: a separate quarrel, mainly between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It was settled by the Supreme Court judgment of 2018.
