Panna Biosphere Reserve
Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Panna Biosphere Reserve was set up in 2011 in Madhya Pradesh, around Panna Tiger Reserve on the Ken river. A biosphere reserve has a protected core, a buffer zone and a transition zone where people live. All of Panna's tigers had vanished by 2009, so tigers were brought in from other reserves. The reserve is on UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Example
Panna, on the Ken river in Madhya Pradesh, shows that a forest can get its tigers back. This works only if the habitat is still good and poaching is stopped.
Don't confuse with
- Sariska Tiger Reserve: Sariska, in Rajasthan, also lost all its tigers. Tigers were moved there from Ranthambore in 2008, which was India's first such relocation. Panna is in Madhya Pradesh and is also a biosphere reserve.
