Meaning

Singapore is a city-state port on the Strait of Malacca, between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. It began as a port of call, a stop where ships take on fuel, water and food, on the route between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. It is also an entrepot for Asia, a port that collects goods from many countries and re-exports them. Today it is one of the world's busiest container ports.

Example

Singapore is a major container transshipment hub, a port where containers are moved from one ship to another. Large ships drop off containers there, and smaller ships carry them on to nearby ports in Asia.

Don't confuse with

  • Port of call and entrepot: these are two different types of port. Singapore is an example of both, so neither word fully describes it on its own.
