Alamgirpur
Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Alamgirpur is a Harappan site in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, near the Hindon river. The Hindon is a tributary of the Yamuna. Alamgirpur is the easternmost known Harappan site. It belongs mainly to the later stage of the civilisation. It shows that Harappan culture reached the upper Ganga-Yamuna doab, the strip of land between these two rivers. After the cities declined, the population spread into Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, and Alamgirpur fits this eastward spread.
Example
At Alamgirpur, typical Harappan pottery and objects were found in western Uttar Pradesh. This place lies far east of the main cities, such as Harappa in Pakistani Punjab and Mohenjo-daro in Sindh.
Don't confuse with
- Daimabad: Daimabad (Maharashtra) marks the southern limit of Harappan finds. Alamgirpur marks the eastern limit.
