Meaning

Surkotada is a fortified Harappan site in Kachchh district, Gujarat. It had a citadel, the raised and walled part of a town, and a lower town, and both had walls. It was occupied mainly in the Mature Harappan phase, c. 2600–1900 BCE, and lived on into later times. It is famous for bones that were once claimed to be of the horse.

Example

Bones found at Surkotada were first identified as horse bones. Other experts later said they were from wild asses or other animals. The question matters because the horse is linked to the Vedic people. So the identification is still debated, and it cannot be treated as settled proof.

Don't confuse with

  • Kanmer: Kanmer is also a fortified Kachchh site, but it is known for its seals and seal-impressed tablets, not horse bones.
