Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Manda is a Harappan site on the right bank of the Chenab river, near Akhnoor in Jammu district. It is the northernmost Harappan site in India. It lies at the foot of the Himalayas. It may have helped get timber and other hill products for the plains. The Archaeological Survey of India excavated it in the 1970s.
Example
The digging at Manda found three stages of settlement. The first is a pre-Harappan level. The second is a Harappan level with typical pottery and objects. The third is a group of much later layers. This shows that Harappan culture reached Jammu and Kashmir.
Don't confuse with
- Shortughai: Shortughai is in Afghanistan. It is the northernmost Harappan site overall and was a trading post for lapis lazuli, a blue stone. Manda is the northernmost site within India.
