Ropar

History glossary

Also called: Rupnagar · Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Ropar, now called Rupnagar, is a Harappan site on the Sutlej river in Indian Punjab, at the foot of the Shivalik hills. Digging began in 1953. It was the first Harappan site to be excavated in independent India. This mattered because after Partition (1947), the major sites like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro went to Pakistan. Ropar also has later layers, so the history of the site runs into much later periods.

Example

At Ropar, a man was found buried with a dog in his grave. This is an unusual burial for the Harappans. Most Harappans buried their dead in pits, sometimes with pottery and ornaments.
