Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Sutkagen Dor is a Harappan site on the Makran coast of Balochistan, Pakistan, near the border with Iran. It is the westernmost known Harappan site. It had a fortified settlement. It probably served as a trading post on the sea route to the Persian Gulf. It shows that Harappans built settlements far from their heartland to control trade routes.
Example
Sutkagen Dor lay on the coast leading west, towards the Gulf. Harappan goods may have passed this way to Magan (Oman) and Dilmun (Bahrain). Mesopotamian texts called the Harappan region Meluhha, "the land of seafarers."
Don't confuse with
- Shortughai: Shortughai is a Harappan trading post too. It lies in north Afghanistan and supplied lapis lazuli, a blue stone. Sutkagen Dor is a coastal post in the far west.
