Meaning

Daimabad is a site on the Pravara river, a tributary of the Godavari, in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. It is usually called the southernmost Harappan site. It belongs to the late stage of the civilisation, when Harappan influence spread south and east. It is best known for a hoard of heavy bronze objects. A hoard is a set of valuables hidden or stored together.

Example

The Daimabad hoard has four bronze pieces:

  • a chariot drawn by two oxen, with a man riding it
  • an elephant
  • a rhinoceros
  • a buffalo

Scholars still debate how old the hoard is and whether it is truly Harappan.

Don't confuse with

  • Alamgirpur: Alamgirpur (Uttar Pradesh) marks the eastern limit of Harappan finds. Daimabad marks the southern limit.
