Allasani Peddana
Also called: Andhra Kavitapitamaha · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Allasani Peddana was the leading Telugu poet at the court of Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara (r. 1509–29). People honoured him as Andhra Kavitapitamaha, meaning "grandfather of Telugu poetry". He wrote in the prabandha style, which tells an old story in long, richly decorated verse. His work shows how much Krishnadeva Raya supported Telugu literature.
Example
Peddana's best-known work is the Manucharitra. It retells the story of Svarochisha Manu, taken from the Puranas, and is counted among the classics of Telugu literature.
Don't confuse with
- Amuktamalyada: this Telugu work about the poet-saint Andal, which includes a section on statecraft called Rajaniti, was written by Krishnadeva Raya himself, not by Peddana.
