Meaning

The Tuluva dynasty was the third ruling family of Vijayanagara. It ruled from 1503 to 1542. Its greatest king, Krishnadeva Raya, took the empire to its peak. After he died in 1529, the next kings faced revolts by nayakas, the local military chiefs. By 1542 control had passed to the Aravidu dynasty.

Example

Krishnadeva Raya (r. 1509–29) took the Raichur doab in 1512 and subdued Orissa in 1514. In 1520 he gave Bijapur severe defeats. He built temples and gopurams (gateway towers) and founded the town of Nagalapuram, named after his mother. He also wrote the Telugu work Amuktamalyada.

Don't confuse with

  • Aravidu dynasty: it was the last dynasty, from 1542. Rama Raya, who lost at Talikota in 1565, belonged to the Aravidu period, not to the Tuluva one.
