Sangama dynasty

History glossary

Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "An Imperial Capital: Vijayanagara"

Meaning

The Sangama dynasty was the first ruling family of Vijayanagara. Tradition and inscriptions say it was founded by the brothers Harihara and Bukka in 1336, though the date is not fully certain. The brothers had been governors under Muhammad bin Tughlaq, and they broke away from Delhi's rule. The Sangamas ruled until 1485, when the Saluvas took over.

Example

The Sangama kings seem to have built the Hiriya canal at the capital. It drew water from a dam across the Tungabhadra river. The canal watered the valley between the "sacred centre" and the "urban core".

Don't confuse with

  • Tuluva dynasty: it was the third dynasty (1503–1542), to which Krishnadeva Raya belonged. The Sangamas were the founders.
