Deva Raya II

History glossary

Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Deva Raya II was a king of the Sangama dynasty. He ruled Vijayanagara from c. 1424 to 1446. Cavalry (soldiers on horseback) won wars in the Deccan, so he took Muslim horsemen and archers into his army to make it stronger. His reign is one of the high points of the Sangama period.

Example

In 1443 Abdur Razzaq visited Deva Raya II's court. Razzaq was the envoy (official messenger) of a Persian ruler, sent to Calicut. He later wrote that the city had seven lines of forts.

Don't confuse with

  • Krishnadeva Raya: he was a Tuluva king (1509–29), not a Sangama. The detailed Portuguese accounts by Paes and Nuniz come from his time, not from the reign of Deva Raya II.
