Meaning

The Battle of Raichur was fought in 1520 between Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara and Ismail Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur. Raichur stands in the Raichur doab. A doab is the land between two rivers, here the Krishna and the Tungabhadra. This rich land was fought over for a long time by Vijayanagara and the Deccan Sultans. The victory was one of Krishnadeva Raya's greatest military successes.

Example

In 1520 Krishnadeva Raya beat the Bijapur army and took the fort of Raichur. This was one of the "severe defeats" he gave Bijapur, and it made his hold on the Raichur doab firm. He had first gained control of the doab in 1512.

Don't confuse with

  • Battle of Talikota (Rakshasi-Tangadi), 1565: here the Sultanates won. The combined armies of Bijapur, Ahmadnagar and Golconda defeated Rama Raya, and the capital was then sacked.
