Rama Raya
Also called: Aliya Rama Raya · Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "An Imperial Capital: Vijayanagara"
Meaning
Rama Raya was the chief minister of Vijayanagara after Krishnadeva Raya. He was the real power in the state, though he was not crowned king. He was also Krishnadeva Raya's son-in-law, which is why he is called "Aliya" (son-in-law) Rama Raya. He kept setting one Deccan Sultan against another. In the end this pushed the Sultans to unite against Vijayanagara.
Example
In 1565 the combined armies of Bijapur, Ahmadnagar and Golconda defeated Rama Raya at Rakshasi-Tangadi (Talikota), and he was killed. After this the city of Vijayanagara was sacked over several months and was abandoned within a few years.
Don't confuse with
- Krishnadeva Raya: he did not fight at Talikota. He died of illness in 1529. Rama Raya was a chief minister at Talikota, not the king.
