Aravidu dynasty

History glossary

Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "An Imperial Capital: Vijayanagara"

Meaning

The Aravidu dynasty was the fourth and last ruling family of the Vijayanagara empire. It took control in 1542, after the strains that followed Krishnadeva Raya's death in 1529. Its chief minister, Rama Raya, lost the battle of Rakshasi-Tangadi (Talikota) in 1565, and the capital was sacked. The Aravidus kept ruling from new capitals, which shows that the empire did not end in 1565.

Example

After the city of Vijayanagara was sacked and abandoned, the Aravidus ruled first from Penukonda and later from Chandragiri, near Tirupati. Their power shrank as the nayakas, or local military chiefs, set up their own kingdoms. The empire came to an end by the mid-17th century.

Don't confuse with

  • Tuluva dynasty: this was the dynasty before the Aravidus (1503–1542). Krishnadeva Raya belonged to it, not to the Aravidu line.
