Meaning

Chirand is a Neolithic site on the bank of the Ganga in Saran district, Bihar. Neolithic means the New Stone Age, when people farmed and used polished stone tools. Chirand is famous for its large number of tools made of bone and antler (deer horn). It also has later Chalcolithic and Iron Age layers. It shows that early farmers settled in the middle Ganga plain, not only in the north-west.

Example

At Chirand, digs found bone needles, points and other tools made of deer antler. They were found together with pottery and signs of farming, which shows a settled Neolithic village in Bihar.

Don't confuse with

  • Koldihwa: a Neolithic site in the Belan valley of Uttar Pradesh. It is known for early rice remains, not for bone tools.
