Meaning

Lahuradewa is an early farming site in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, in the middle Ganga plain. It has some of the earliest evidence of rice in the Ganga plain, dated to about the 7th millennium BCE. Charred rice grains and early pottery show that people here were starting to farm very early. This matters because it shows that farming did not begin only in the north-west, at Mehrgarh. The Ganga plain had its own early start.

Example

At Lahuradewa (Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh), charred rice from the lowest levels has been dated to c. 7th millennium BCE. That makes it one of the oldest rice sites in South Asia.

Don't confuse with

  • Mehrgarh: the oldest Neolithic village of the subcontinent, c. 7000 BCE, on the Bolan River in present-day Pakistan. Its people grew wheat and barley, not rice.
