Piklihal
Topic: Prehistory: Human Origins and Stone Age Cultures · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Piklihal is a Neolithic site in Raichur district of Karnataka. Its people were mainly cattle herders. They set up seasonal camps, kept cattle in pens, and left behind ash mounds made by burning heaps of cattle dung. The site matters because it shows that herding was the base of the south Indian Neolithic.
Example
At Piklihal (Raichur, Karnataka), there are rock bruisings of cattle and humans along with the camps. Rock bruisings are pictures made by hammering or pecking the rock surface. They show how central cattle were to these people.
Don't confuse with
- Utnur: another ash-mound site, but it is in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana. Piklihal is in Karnataka and is better known for its rock bruisings.
