Meaning

Koldihwa is a Neolithic site in the Belan valley of Uttar Pradesh, near Prayagraj. It is known for early evidence of rice cultivation in India. Rice husks were found mixed into the clay of its pottery. Very early dates were once claimed for this rice, but scholars now doubt them. Even so, Koldihwa remains important for the story of rice farming in the Ganga region.

Example

At Koldihwa, potters mixed rice husk into the clay of their pots, which shows that rice was in use. Diggers also found polished stone axes and cord-marked pottery.

Don't confuse with

  • Mehrgarh: the subcontinent's earliest farming village, c. 7000 BCE, on the Bolan River in Pakistan. It grew wheat and barley, not rice.
