Sarutaru

Meaning
Sarutaru is a Neolithic site near Guwahati in Assam. It is known for shouldered celts and cord-marked pottery. A celt is a polished stone axe-head, and a "shouldered" celt has a narrower top part, like a neck, for fixing it to a handle. Cord-marked pottery has rope patterns pressed into the clay. The site matters because these tools link north-east India with the Neolithic of south-east Asia rather than with the rest of India.
Example
Shouldered celts found at Sarutaru (Assam) look like those found in Myanmar and other parts of south-east Asia. This points to ties across the eastern hills.
Don't confuse with
- Daojali Hading: another Neolithic site in the north-east (Dima Hasao hills, Assam) with similar tools. Sarutaru is the one near Guwahati.
