Meaning

Daojali Hading is a Neolithic site in the North Cachar hills (Dima Hasao) of Assam. Its finds include cord-marked pottery (pots pressed with cord to leave a pattern), polished stone axes, grinding stones and jadeite. Jadeite is a hard green stone that is not found locally. These finds show that north-east India had contacts with south-east Asia and China. It is one of the best-known Neolithic sites of the north-east.

Example

The jadeite pieces at Daojali Hading most likely came from Myanmar or southern China. Shouldered stone axes and cord-marked pots like those of south-east Asia were also found there.

Don't confuse with

  • Burzahom and Gufkral (Kashmir): these Neolithic sites are known for pit dwellings. Daojali Hading's links run east to south-east Asia, not to Central Asia.
