Meaning

Kanmer is a small Harappan settlement in Kachchh district, Gujarat, at the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. A massive fortification wall surrounded it. It was probably useful for its position on routes and its nearby resources. Kanmer helps show how Gujarat was dotted with fortified Harappan towns as well as large centres like Dholavira and Lothal.

Example

Harappan seals were found at Kanmer. Terracotta tablets carrying seal impressions were also found. Harappans pressed seals on clay to secure bags of goods. An unbroken sealing showed that the goods had not been tampered with and also showed who sent them.

Don't confuse with

  • Surkotada: Surkotada is another fortified Kachchh site. It is known for the debated horse bones, not for seal-impressed tablets.
