Meaning

Paiyampalli is an archaeological site in the Vellore region of Tamil Nadu. It has both Neolithic remains (early farming, polished stone tools) and megalithic remains (later burials marked with big stones). The site matters because it is one of the few important Neolithic sites in Tamil Nadu. It also shows how farming communities in the south carried on into the later megalithic age.

Example

At Paiyampalli (Tamil Nadu), archaeologists found remains of pulses such as horse gram, along with Neolithic tools and pottery. Megalithic burials were found in the upper levels.

Don't confuse with

  • Attirampakkam: also in Tamil Nadu, but it is a much older Lower Palaeolithic site (c. 1.5–1.7 million years ago) with handaxes. It has no farming.
