Meaning

Rojdi is a Harappan site on the Bhadar river in Saurashtra, Gujarat. Its people built a stone wall around it. It belongs to the Harappan tradition of Gujarat, which continued into the later phase. Rojdi matters because it shows that farming in Gujarat was different from farming in the Indus plains.

Example

Charred seeds found at Rojdi show that millets were a major crop. Millets are small, hardy grains grown in the summer rains. In the Indus plains, wheat and barley were the main crops. This matches the wider finding that millets come mainly from Harappan sites in Gujarat, while rice was rare.

Don't confuse with

  • Lothal: Lothal is a Gujarat port and craft town with a dockyard. Rojdi is an inland farming settlement known for its millet evidence.
