Meaning

Sanganakallu is a Neolithic site near Ballari in Karnataka. It sits on top of a granite hill and is dated to c. 2000 BCE. It was a centre for making polished stone axes, which were ground smooth so they had a sharp, strong edge. Its people kept cattle and grew millets and pulses. It matters as a key example of the southern Neolithic, where farming came later than in the north-west.

Example

At Sanganakallu (Ballari, Karnataka, c. 2000 BCE), finished axes and half-made tools have been found together. This shows the hill was a stone tool-making site as well as a village.

Don't confuse with

  • Mehrgarh: the oldest Neolithic village of the subcontinent, c. 7000 BCE, in present-day Pakistan. Sanganakallu is about five thousand years later and lies in the south.
