Brown Revolution

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Brown Revolution is a colour label with several meanings. It is used for growth in leather production, in cocoa production and in non-conventional energy, meaning energy from sources other than coal, oil and gas. The leather link ties it to livestock, because hides are a by-product of animal rearing. Like most colour labels, it comes from journalists and textbooks rather than from a single named scheme.

Example

Hides from cattle and goats in a rural area are tanned and turned into shoes and bags. This adds value to a livestock by-product, which is the kind of growth the Brown Revolution describes.

Don't confuse with

  • Black Revolution: this is about petroleum and biofuels such as ethanol. Brown covers leather, cocoa and non-conventional energy.
