Meaning

The Purple Revolution is the promotion of lavender farming in Jammu and Kashmir. Lavender is an aromatic crop, and its oil is used in perfumes and cosmetics. It is backed by the CSIR Aroma Mission (2016), which helps farmers grow aromatic plants. It shows crop diversification in hilly areas, where farmers move from low-return crops to a high-value one.

Example

In Bhaderwah, in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, farmers have taken up lavender under the CSIR Aroma Mission (2016). The flowers are distilled into oil, which earns more than the crops these farmers grew before.

Don't confuse with

  • Pink Revolution: this refers to meat and poultry processing, and also to onions or pharmaceuticals. It is not about flowers or aromatic crops.
