Round Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Round Revolution means growth in potato production. It takes its name from the potato's round shape. The potato is a tuber crop that feeds many people and gives farmers a cash income. Like most colour labels, this one comes from journalists and textbooks. It is not the name of an official scheme.

Example

In the rabi season, farmers on the northern plains often grow potatoes (rabi crops are sown in winter and harvested in spring). This gives them another source of income besides wheat. Efforts to raise potato output and link it to cold storage and processing come under the Round Revolution.

Don't confuse with

  • Red Revolution: this refers to meat and tomato production, not potatoes.
