Silver Fibre Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Silver Fibre Revolution means growth in cotton production. Cotton is a fibre crop and the raw material for India's textile industry. The label marks the drive to raise cotton output and income. It is a common exam trap because it looks very similar to another label.

Example

In 1995, Kisan Mehta of the NGO Prakruti proposed growing cotton organically in Maharashtra. Later, 130 farmers grew organic cotton on 1,200 ha to IFOAM standards. This showed a greener way to grow India's "silver fibre".

Don't confuse with

  • Silver Revolution: this refers to eggs and poultry. Only the "Fibre" label means cotton.
  • Golden Fibre Revolution: this refers to jute, not cotton.
