Rainbow Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Rainbow Revolution means all-round growth of every part of farming at the same time. This covers crops, horticulture, fisheries, dairy and poultry. It was set out in the National Agricultural Policy (2000). Each other "colour" revolution pushes a single product. The Rainbow Revolution joins all of them, just as a rainbow joins all colours.

Example

Under the National Agricultural Policy (2000), a region might raise grain output (Green), milk (White), fish (Blue) and fruits and vegetables (Golden) together. It would not focus on just one product.

Don't confuse with

  • Evergreen Revolution: this was M.S. Swaminathan's call to raise farm productivity without harming the environment. It is about sustainability, not about covering every sector at once.
