Meaning

This is an industrial region of south India. It runs from Bengaluru through Hosur, Salem and Coimbatore to Chennai and Madurai. It grew first on cotton textiles, using local cotton and hydel (water-generated) power from the Pykara project. Next, public-sector engineering units came up. Today it is strong in cars, electronics and software. It shows how a region can change from agro-based to high-tech industry.

Example

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) grew as a cotton textile centre. Bengaluru (Karnataka) is now India's electronics and software capital, and Chennai-Sriperumbudur is a major car-making hub.

Don't confuse with

  • Chota Nagpur industrial region: that region grew on minerals and heavy steel. This region has few heavy minerals and grew on cotton, hydel power and skills.
