Hugli industrial region

Geography glossary

Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

This is an old industrial belt along the Hugli river around Kolkata. It runs from Bansberia to Birlanagar. It grew on jute mills, cheap river transport, Kolkata's port and banks, and coal and iron from nearby Chota Nagpur. It declined later. At Partition, the mills stayed in India but most jute fields went to East Pakistan. Labour and power problems added to the decline.

Example

India's first jute mill opened at Rishra, near Kolkata (West Bengal), in 1855. Jute mills still line both banks of the Hugli.

Don't confuse with

  • Chota Nagpur industrial region: it supplied coal and iron to the Hugli belt. But Chota Nagpur's own base is mining and steel, not jute.
