Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

This industrial region lies between Ahmedabad and Vadodara and stretches south to Surat and Valsad. It began with cotton textiles. After oil and natural gas were found in the Cambay basin, it grew into petrochemicals, chemicals and fertilisers. Ports such as Kandla and Mundra help it import inputs and export goods. Surat adds diamond cutting and synthetic fabrics.

Example

Ahmedabad was called the "Manchester of India" for its cotton mills. Today the Ahmedabad-Vadodara belt is a petrochemical and pharma hub, and Surat cuts and polishes most of the world's diamonds.

Don't confuse with

  • Mumbai-Pune industrial region: it also began with cotton mills. But it is based in Maharashtra, around Mumbai port and Bombay High oil.
