Chota Nagpur industrial region
Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
This is India's main heavy-industry region. It covers Jharkhand, north Odisha and western West Bengal. Coal from the Damodar valley and iron ore from Singhbhum and Odisha lie close together. The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) supplies power. This lowers the cost of moving heavy raw materials, so steel plants and other heavy industries gathered here.
Example
Steel plants at Jamshedpur and Bokaro (Jharkhand) and at Durgapur and Burnpur (West Bengal). TISCO at Jamshedpur (1907) gets its iron ore from Noamundi and its coal from Jharia.
Don't confuse with
- Hugli industrial region: that river belt around Kolkata grew on jute and the port. Chota Nagpur grew on minerals and steel.
